PREVENTING DENTAL PROBLEMS

Most Dental treatment is one of repair.  It is so much better to prevent problems from occurring in the first place.  I once had it described to me like this:

If an engineer were to find a tooth broken on a cog wheel, he would replace the whole wheel.  We have to patch and repair as we do not have the luxury of taking new mouths off the shelf!

The best prevention is day in, day out at home.  Good habits with your diet and tooth cleaning are essential.  I can not do this for you, but my job is to monitor and advise as necessary.

Tooth decay and gum disease can be avoided and I shall be keen to advise you accordingly.  Regular visits give me the opportunity to diagnose any potential problems at an early stage.

The disease of the future is wear on teeth.  The first two problems can be addressed with good hygiene and good diet.  Keeping your teeth longer does mean that they are more susceptible to wear and this is exacerbated by clenching or grinding habits.  Again prevention is better than cure.

Diet advice:

Eat regular balanced meals and don’t snack imbetween.  Each time you eat, acid is produced to soften the enamel of your teeth for about 45 minutes.  This definitely includes drinks as well, fizzy drinks are acidic in themselves and so these can soften teeth too, low calorie ones may be good for your waist line but are just as acidic.

Brushing your teeth in this 45 minute window is also not a good idea as this is brushing on softened enamel and can wear it away.

Tooth Cleaning:

Manual brushes work but here’s the thing.  You can beat a cake by hand but how much easier is it by using a food mixer.  The same applies to tooth brushes, they make a boring job easier!

Cleaning imbetween your teeth is also essential.  Often these little brushes are easier to use than floss and more efficient than wood sticks.  Lyn our Hygienist will be pleased to assist you with choosing the most appropriate sizes.
