ROOT CANAL TREATMENT

Root canal treatment is used to try to preserve your tooth when decay or infection has damaged the nerve and blood vessels inside it.  You may have heard this referred to as ‘taking the nerve out of the tooth’.  You can only really see these on x-rays.

An infection within a tooth can be the source of severe toothaches, and the only alternative treatment is the loss of the tooth.  The treatment can be viewed as a glorified filling that involves the tiny canals running down the roots of the teeth.  Front teeth are generally easier to treat than back teeth, as they usually only have one root canal to seal.

Following root canal treatment some discomfort is normal for 24-48 hours and this should be controlled with over the counter pain killers.  If symptoms persist, either the treatment can be repeated or the tooth can be extracted.  Some teeth will also discolour following this treatment.

Here is a single rooted front tooth with the white stripe of root filling down its canal.

A two rooted back tooth

A TYPICAL CASE:

An infected molar through a large filling, that is the white bit.

Notice the dark area of bone around the roots.

After the root filling is placed

One year on, and see how the bone has healed, filling in the darkened area.
